The Linux kernel is written in C language. Linux was first developed by Finnish hacker Linus Torvalds in an attempt to provide a free Unix-like operating system on the Intel x86 architecture. Technically speaking Linux is a kernel. "Kernel" refers to a system software that provides hardware abstraction layer, disk and file system control, multitasking and other functions. A kernel is not a complete operating system. A complete operating system based on the Linux kernel is called the Linux operating system, or GNU/Linux.
