1. Lack of game support files: BIOS files
Many games require the support of BIOS files to run. For example, NEOGEO games require the BIOS file neogeo.zip to play. If not, MAME will not recognize NEOGEO games. At the top of this section is the download address for all BIOS files used by MAME. It is recommended to go there to download all the BIOS files and put them together with the game ROM. Maybe they will be needed at some point.
2. The downloaded ROM is a clone game (also called a derivative version) and lacks the main ROM.
Clone games generally only contain those files that are different from the main game ROM and cannot be run independently. You need to download the main ROM and put them together to play.
3. The versions of the emulator and ROM files do not match
The emulator is constantly being upgraded, and so are the ROM files. When a new version of MAME is released, some previous ROMs will be more or less upgraded, and the new version of MAME generally only supports new versions of ROMs.
4. The game ROM file is not special, but due to game copyright issues, the official version of MAME does not support it. This type of game requires a specially modified MAME emulator to play.
