No checkpoints: Do not restart checkpoints, this will invalidate the S rank. The task must be completed within a lifetime. You can use Restart Task without exiting the task.
Speed: Complete the task in the shortest possible time. This is the most important ranking factor! For example, in mission 4, I performed S rank by flying over all enemies and completing all objectives. Then I ran the same task again and waited 5 minutes at the start and then continued with the task and got better payouts in the results screen but only got a C grade. The conclusion is that even if you do everything else perfectly without taking any damage, time itself can lower your ranking from an S to a C.
Damage taken: This is shown as "Repair Cost" in the results screen. The lower the maintenance cost, the better. This seems to have little effect on rank in most missions, and far outweighs getting faster times. Since you're not allowed to restart the checkpoint, you can't take much damage to complete it in one life anyway (using a repair kit will do the trick).
Ammo consumed: This is shown as "Ammo Cost" in the results screen. This has little impact on most tasks and goes far beyond getting faster times. It doesn't count how many shots you fired, but the cost of the ammo consumed. You can see the ammo cost of each weapon in the assembly menu > open the detailed arm/back menu > press the / :y: key: triangle: "toggle display" > look for the "ammo cost" on each weapon. You can also filter weapons by ammo cost per shot: In the detailed arm/back menu press / :ls: to :l3: "Sort" and select the bottom option "Ammo Cost". This will show the cheapest shot per shot at the top. Generally speaking, ammo costs will be about the same no matter what weapon you use, since weapons with a higher cost per shot will do more damage, while weapons with a lower cost per shot (like Gatling guns) require a lot more ammo To kill. So it's balanced anyway. Just use whatever has the fastest kill speed. Melee weapons consume no ammo and have no cost associated with them, but they have a cooldown that increases the time it takes to complete a mission. It's usually best to go with the one that kills the fastest (dual-wielding Gatling guns is good) and gets the faster time to make up for the ammo cost.
Killing Specific Enemies/Other Special Conditions: The game doesn't tell you this, but some missions can only be S-ranked if you perform optional objectives or kill specific optional enemies that hold a battle log. For example, in Mission 6: Attack the Dam Complex, I completed the mission perfectly and received 183,000 COAM in the payment screen, but only received an A rank. I then killed the optional battle log enemies but got S rank for only 120,000 COAM payout. The conclusion is that certain missions cannot be S-rated unless you meet the "hidden" requirements. Generally speaking, if the mission description says there are bonuses for certain actions, then they are probably mandatory for S rank.
