December 8 news Fraunhofer SIT Security Laboratory recently stated that they have successfully cracked Windows7's disk encryption technology BitLocker.
Fraunhofer SIT researchers say they can successfully crack data on disks even when using BitLocker together with a hardware-based Trusted Platform Module (TPM). Previously, the industry generally believed that the merger of BitLocker and TPM could basically ensure the safety of disk data.
Fraunhofer SIT researchers said: "The attack method demonstrated this time does not mean that BitLocker is vulnerable, or that trusted computing is useless. They are still effective disk encryption products, but they are not as secure as imagined. "
BitLocker disk encryption technology is used in Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Server 2008 to prevent others from illegally reading data on the hard disk. If used in conjunction with TPM, security will be greatly improved.
In response, Microsoft said it was aware of the problem but declined to comment further.
