In Windows 7, we use homegroup to share files, which is convenient and fast. However, when trying to share files with other versions of Windows systems outside of Homegroup, it often fails. The reasons are often varied, such as different workgroup names, incorrect settings, etc. To solve the problem, below we provide a set of operating procedures for reference. Let’s take a look at the specific steps!
Step 1: Synchronize workgroups
No matter what version of the Windows operating system you are using, the first step is to ensure that the workgroup names of all computers on the network are consistent.
To view or change the computer's workgroup, computer name and other information, right-click "Computer" and select "Properties".
If the relevant information needs to be changed, click "Change settings" in the "Computer name, domain and workgroup settings" column.
Click Change.
After entering the appropriate computer name/workgroup name, press OK.
After this step is completed, please restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
Step 2: Change related settings of Windows 7
Open "Control PanelNetwork and InternetNetwork and Sharing CenterAdvanced Sharing Settings".
Enable "Network Discovery", "File and Printer Sharing", "Public Folder Sharing"; in the "Password Protected Sharing" section, please select "Turn off password protected sharing".
Note: It is best to turn on media streaming; in addition, in the "Homegroup" section, it is recommended to select "Allow Windows to manage homegroup connections (recommended)".
Step 3: Shared object settings
Now, we turn to shared objects. The most direct method: drag and drop the files/folders that need to be shared directly into the public folder.
If you need to share some specific Windows 7 folders, right-click the folder and select "Properties".
