On November 18, 2010, the 17th HDwiki website building lecture series invited Zhou Hui, executive editor of the interactive encyclopedia "Interactive Word Sea", who will share with you her personal insights into the transition from the traditional editing and publishing industry to the e-era.
The following are the highlights of this lecture.
Moderator: Hello everyone, with the purpose of "promoting the development of the wiki industry and strengthening communication and cooperation among webmasters", the 17th issue of the "HDwiki Series Webmaster Training Lectures" is here with you again!
Haha, I am very honored to invite Interactive Encyclopedia Zhou Hui in this issue. Ms. Zhou is currently the executive editor of the monthly magazine "Interactive Word Sea" in Interactive Encyclopedia. She has 12 years of experience in the traditional publishing industry and is very knowledgeable about the publishing industry. Understand that in the coming time, she will share with you her personal experience of entering the e-era from the traditional editing and publishing industry.
Zhou Hui: I’m so excited that I don’t know what to say. The two words online editor and traditional publishing editor carry too much together.
Moderator: Haha, Ms. Zhou has a lot of rich experience in the traditional publishing industry. Can you briefly summarize your previous work in the traditional publishing industry and the characteristics of the traditional publishing industry?
Zhou Hui: The characteristics of the traditional publishing industry can be summed up in one sentence: cultural accumulation and inheritance. In fact, the processes of the traditional publishing industry are very similar to the functions and work processes of our encyclopedia site. It should be said that encyclopedia sites are an extension of the traditional publishing field using the most advanced wiki technology. Because the essence of book publishing from ancient times to the present is the dissemination of content. The difference is that the media of traditional publishing range from bamboo, silk to paper, and even optical disk storage devices. Although the communication media are different in each historical stage, the essence of content communication has not changed.
Host: Well, okay, what prompted you to transition from the traditional publishing industry to the Internet industry?
Zhou Hui: I'm afraid the word transition is not appropriate for me. I belong to the first generation of Internet users in China. I have been making electronic journals since the Yinghaiwei and 263 eras. However, at that time, the traditional publishing industry was my main business, and the Internet was always a supplementary tool. With the development of Internet technology, I gradually discovered that the Internet has penetrated the entire workflow of traditional publishing and editing, from topic planning, market research, author selection, manuscript editing, proofreading, and even later typesetting, printing, and distribution. Like most of us in the group today, all aspects of work and life are surrounded by the Internet. And when I came to Interactive Encyclopedia, I did not completely break away from the traditional publishing industry, because here I am still responsible for the editing and publishing of "Interactive Word Sea". I think the traditional publishing industry and the Internet industry will not be hostile forces, and each has its own advantages. .
Moderator: It should be said that from the traditional publishing industry to the Internet industry, there will definitely be a process of adaptation. How did you adapt to this change?
Zhou Hui: If there have been changes, the biggest change is that my mental pressure has been reduced. Because in publishing houses, they are called "editors in charge." These four words may seem simple to outsiders, but they are as heavy as a mountain to us. Because among all the publications managed by the Publishing House, the standards and requirements for publishing houses are the highest. Everyone knows that the pass rate is one in 10,000. If it is found that there is more than 1 in 10,000, everyone can take it. File a complaint or even sue for compensation.
Since ancient times, "black and white" has been used as evidence of accusations in various lawsuits. Moreover, if there is a problem with the editing quality, it will directly cause the scrapping of this edition of the book. This is a huge waste from the perspective of environmental protection and the economic interests of the publishing house. Therefore, editors at publishing houses are under great mental pressure.
Relatively speaking, online editing is much easier, because errors can be modified at any time, especially our current wiki technology, which is a great way for us to escape. Knowledge points can be sorted out and classified on the basis of continuous revision of knowledge points.
Of course, there are also flaws. It is because it is too easy, so many online editors focus on modifying the titles, especially the headlines of the big portal editors, which makes the online editors themselves impetuous. The articles they edit are not read by netizens. Even more impetuous.
Moderator: Okay, can you briefly describe your current main work at Interactive Encyclopedia?
Zhou Hui: I am currently mainly responsible for the editing work of Interactive Encyclopedia's internal magazine "Interactive Word Sea", and also part of the editorial office of the Interactive Encyclopedia Operations Department.
Moderator: Can you talk to us about the specific process and content of your daily work?
Zhou Hui: Let’s talk about the editing work of “Interactive Word Sea”. All contents of “Interactive Word Sea” are drawn from the three basic materials of the Interactive Encyclopedia: entries, articles, and views.
Through some neglected knowledge clues around us, we gathered some knowledge points and compiled some word media communication forms suitable for modern people to read quickly.
Moderator: Maybe many people are not very clear about the concept of word media. Can you explain it to us?
Zhou Hui: Ci Media uses "words" as the communication medium to facilitate the rapid and accurate dissemination of content. For details, please search for "Word Media" on the interactive encyclopedia page. That word was created by me, O(∩_∩)O~
Moderator: Well, you have already mentioned the impact of the Internet on the publishing industry. So starting from Wiki-type websites, how do you view the impact of digitization and the Internet on the traditional publishing industry? Can you talk about it in detail?
Zhou Hui: I personally believe that the biggest impact of digital publishing and the Internet on the traditional publishing industry is the impact and change of reading methods.
Moderator: Let’s give a specific example. Recently, Interactive Encyclopedia launched the world’s first ipAD Chinese encyclopedia application. What do you think of this?
Zhou Hui: This is a newer way of reading, and it is also the "Wiki Reading" method pioneered by our interactive encyclopedia. On traditional websites, you can see links in articles, but the links to those keywords all go to another article, diverting your thoughts or even interrupting them, affecting people's ability to concentrate on reading. But in our interactive encyclopedia's current Wikipedia reading, all links in articles and entries are internal links, and they are internal links for precise searches. If you don't understand this word, move your mouse to the linked word and you can immediately see the summary of this entry.
No need to search anymore, it can help you understand the meaning of this article, especially the "Wiki Red Mansions" we launched a few months ago. You can see that the original text of Dream of Red Mansions has been moved to the interactive encyclopedia by our netizens.
Moderator: Okay, the following may be a question that many webmasters are concerned about, which is how to better integrate Wiki-type websites with the traditional publishing industry? What do you think?
Zhou Hui: Wiki-type websites can appear in the form of authors or editors in the traditional publishing industry, because in the era of knowledge explosion, it is not easy to reappear generalists who have experienced dynasties. Knowledge is exploding, and with the Internet, we don’t need to memorize a lot of knowledge points. However, we can use wiki technology to create more personalized knowledge collections, thus replacing the status of some knowledge-conducting authors.
Moderator: Maybe for ordinary webmasters, they don’t understand the entire traditional publishing industry, and they don’t know how to deal with the traditional publishing industry. Therefore, it is difficult to publish publications like "Interactive Word Sea" like Interactive Encyclopedia. , do you have any good suggestions?
Zhou Hui: We will focus on supporting some webmasters next year and provide some opportunities to integrate with the traditional publishing industry by sorting out personalized knowledge points. Interactive Encyclopedia is a huge platform. We are not only the largest encyclopedia website in the world, but also the largest Chinese knowledge media in the world. As far as I know, a considerable number of our netizens are editors in the traditional publishing industry, including editors of books, journals, newspapers and websites, so we will provide everyone with a platform to maximize the benefits of the knowledge economy.
Moderator: Well, if some local websites have very good encyclopedia content and want to contact local publishing houses to publish some publications like "Interactive Word Sea", what suggestions would you give them?
Zhou Hui: You can use a form similar to the cold knowledge and sharp-edged newspapers on the homepage of our interactive encyclopedia, and submit a single article to slowly refine the knowledge points yourself and summarize them into a book manuscript. This cycle will be faster than now Full-time writers in book companies can accumulate books faster. Of course, from the perspective of being responsible to everyone, it is not recommended to use wiki technology to accumulate books. , I still hope that everyone will develop their interests and hobbies to the extreme. Don't create too many cultural fast foods. Only knowledge points with practical value can facilitate the transformation of traditional publishing into commercialization.
Moderator: Okay, my last question is, for editors in traditional industries and online editors, what kind of advice can you give them? Can you talk about it from the perspective of career planning?
Zhou Hui: I hope everyone will not be too impetuous. Being irresponsible for every word you edit means being irresponsible for your own future. Because editing is a profession that requires long-term accumulation. If you want to become more valuable as you get older, you must give yourself enough opportunities to accumulate. We say that "words are like people", but in fact "literature" is also like people, and the "books" compiled are also like people. It is easy to be an editor, but it is not easy to be a conscientious editor. Everyone needs to be able to endure loneliness. Staying with knowledge is very lonely.
In addition, since you have chosen the encyclopedia category, it means that you and we are people who love knowledge and are willing to spread knowledge.
HDwiki is an open source encyclopedia website building system for Chinese users developed by Interactive Encyclopedia, the world's largest Chinese encyclopedia website.
