Yesterday, I heard from a friend that GoDaddy was unkind. When he went to GoDaddy to register a domain name that had just been dropped, he found that it had been snatched away by GoDaddy itself. Another friend asked if there was a solution because his GoDaddy domain name was not renewed in time. In fact, I have received quite a few similar inquiries recently. It seems that many friends really don’t understand the “survival” process of domain names. So, let’s simply teach these friends about literacy today. Friends who are familiar with this process can skip it, because the following stuff is very basic.
Below we will only introduce gTLD (also known as "international top-level domain name") as an example. There are too many ccTLDs and QQPCC cannot fully introduce them in such a short article.
When everyone registers a domain name, there are only two situations. First, this domain name has never been registered before, and you are the first to register it. Another situation is that this domain name has been registered by someone before, but later the domain name was withdrawn due to some special reasons, and you re-register it. The first case is taken as an example below, and the second case will be introduced at the end of this article.
When you submit a registration application to a domain name registrar (or agent), the registrar will first search in the whois database. If no one has registered the domain name before you, it will agree to your registration. After you register and pay, the domain name automatically enters ACTIVE (active status), and you need to set up at least one DNS (usually two) for normal use. But it should be noted that the registry gives the registrar five days, and these five days can be deleted at any time. That is to say, in principle, if you are not satisfied within five days, you can delete it and request a refund from the registrar (of course, whether the registrar will refund or not is another matter). Of course, if there is a problem with your payment within five days or the registrar discovers This domain name can also be deleted at any time under other abnormal conditions. Domain names deleted within these five days can be registered immediately without going through the process of domain name deletion caused by other circumstances.
If it is not deleted within five days, the domain name will enter the active state. During this period, you can build a website or park it. Of course, you can also just ignore it, haha. During this period, the ownership of the domain name belongs to the registrant. The domain name can be registered for one to ten years (some can be registered for longer). As long as you renew on time and no one complains about your "violation" during the period of holding it, the domain name It's yours.
If you forget to renew, the domain name will enter the so-called "REGISTRAR-HOLD" (registrar-held state) after expiration. This state is set by the registrar. The original registrant can renew but the domain name cannot be used normally. This time is generally up to forty-five days (usually thirty days). In principle, normal renewal is enough. The registrar should not charge additional fees. If the registrar charges additional fees, you can complain to ICANN.
After the "registrar retention period", the registrar will apply to the registry for deletion. In other words, the domain name has been "deleted" by the registrar. However, this is not a true deletion, but a so-called "REDEMPTIONPERIOD". ” (grace period). In other words, after the domain name is handed over to the registry, the registry will give you thirty days to redeem the domain name, but the price is very high, much higher than the registration or renewal price. Don't blame the registrar for this. The domain name has been returned to the registry and he has no control over it. However, the original registrar has the right to redeem it, and other registrars do not. Only the original registrant can redeem the domain name after paying the "ransom" through the original registry. There is no other way.
If the registry receives the "ransom" you pay within these thirty days, the domain name becomes "PENDINGRESTORE" (restoration pending status). This process takes seven days. If the registrar submits the necessary recovery documents to the registry, then The domain name is restored and the status is changed to ACTIVE. Otherwise, return to the grace period.
If the domain name is not redeemed within these thirty days, it will automatically enter "PENDINGDELETE" (pending deletion status). This stage is reserved for deletion by the registry. There is no way to restore the domain name. In other words, this domain name must be deleted.
Precisely because when the "deletion pending" state is reached, the domain name will undoubtedly be deleted, so there will be rumors on the Internet that "a certain domain name will be "dropped" on a certain day of a certain year, a certain month," but it is not actually the person who posted these things who is a great person. , but is known from the domain names that have entered the domain name pending list.
In theory, a truly deleted domain name will be returned to its original state for registration. However, domain name resources are limited. As mentioned at the beginning of this article, there are two sources of domain names for us to register. One is that no one has ever registered it, and the other is that it "dropped". Nowadays, there are many softwares that can scan unregistered domain names, so among the "brand new" domain names that have never been registered, there are very few good domain names, but there are many excellent domain names among the "dropped" domain names, so there is a way to grab them. That’s how it works (theoretically, brand new ones are also preemptive registrations, haha).
Now the question arises, is the chance to register a “dropped” domain name fair? QQPCC can tell you that it is not fair at all. At present, most of the "dropped" domain names have been checked by large registration companies such as Pool, Enom, Snapnames, Godaddy, etc. Ordinary users have to check good domain names among the dropped domain names. The possibility is basically impossible. However, this is beyond the scope of this article. QQPCC will introduce it specifically in the future.
