Anyone who does SEO knows that links are very important for ranking and indexing, especially for Google. But now it is no longer a feasible strategy to gain search traffic by ranking for ordinary keywords (especially for small businesses). If you study the top ranking ranges, you can start from these Find those links in the rankings.
My last column is to look at how you can increase your external links. Regularly checking your links, recording numbers, and plotting how they increase over time is an important step in controlling your links. However, the most important thing is not to imagine things as usual, but to do something to change them. In other words, you need to build links, lots of links.
How much is "many"?
In the flow of business activity, it's good to have a clear goal in mind (on paper, too) before the project starts. Even if you are your own boss, having realistic, short-term goals, or even bigger goals, can really help improve your career. But you can’t just dream about it, do you have to create something substantial for your link building?
It's obvious that when it comes to links, "many" will become someone else's "hardly any." All this depends on the niche and his competitiveness. But luckily for us, we can easily come up with some practical ideas for our own websites.
In my last column, we looked at three different tools for counting backlinks: Google Webmaster Tools, Open Site Explorer and Majestic SEO. Each one gives different data, and due to the arbitrary nature of website indexing, each data has errors. However, if you have a keen eye, you will notice a very important detail - there is another version of webmaster tools, these tools can be used to check your competitors' backlinks as well as your own backlinks.
Monitor your competitors’ links
Analyzing your competitors' links is a very important part of SEO, but for now, we only want to focus on two points - the number of dead links and the external links of your competitors. This data will help you tailor goals for yourself.
But before you get started, you need to find out which of your competitors is number one. It's important to differentiate between your search opponents and your "real life" opponents (who may in some cases be the same). We just need to simply focus on the websites that rank for your target keywords.
Because these websites take up the position you want, this is the most important thing now. None of this matters if they aren't your real competitors in real life (although the fact that your keyword ranking results are manipulated by a different site than your own may give you some clues) . Likewise, if the first position in your keyword rankings is occupied by Wikipedia, Amazon, etc., you might want to think twice (or just find a lower position), because those types of sites are basically unavailable. May be run on.
Once you have a list of your competitors, simply plug each website into the link checking tool of your choice (Open Site Explorer, Majestic SEO or Yahoo! before they fail of course) and get that data. The website with the most stable links and the most linking domains is obviously what we want as a competitor. Just verbally saying "to build more external links" should be converted into a specific and feasible number. This is the real SEO.
some advice
Obviously, for highly competitive sites, the link count may be high (tens or millions of links) and your actionable goals may seem extremely daunting. What is more practical is to first establish a more feasible goal, complete it, and then gradually build up confidence and set higher goals as you progress next time.
Another important point: this data gives you the rawest, most high-level overview of your opponent's links. In the long run, not all links are created equal, at least so far, which may mean digging deeper into and analyzing a site's link graph. A website may have more external links than another website with high-quality external links. Therefore, defeating them in numbers does not mean defeating them in rankings, but it is important to determine the goal.
