3. Ship prototype
The P-class armored ships were 12 armored ships designed by the Nazi Kriegsmarine in 1937 for the Z plan to rebuild the German naval fleet. They were the successors to the Deutschland-class heavy cruisers. Design work began in 1937 and continued until 1939. At least 9 ships have quite detailed and complete designs. The final design was to be equipped with 2 triple turrets and 6 280 mm high-speed naval guns, just like the previous Deutschland class. These ships are designed according to the standards of armored ships, and the 12 ships scheduled to be built are named P1 to P12. They are also a more advanced armored ship design than the original D-class armored ships that were canceled in 1934.
Although orders for these ships had been placed at various shipyards, construction was halted due to the premature outbreak of World War II, and the construction plan was aborted.
Between March 1938 and December 1939, ship designers drew up at least nine different design plans. Each design has different hull sizes and armament, and some have special designs such as mounting three triple 280mm turrets. Initially, 12 ships were ordered to be built based on the P-class design. These ships were tentatively named P1 to P12. The construction projects were completed by a number of German shipyards, including Deutsche Werft in Kiel and Bunker in Hamburg. Lom-Foss and the Wilhelmshaven War Naval Dockyard in Wilhelmshaven. However, Plan Z was subsequently reduced in scale, and only eight ships were built. The keel of the first ship was laid on February 1, 1940. However, the version of Project Z enjoyed in 1939 eliminated the P-class armored ships from the construction project and replaced them with O-class battlecruisers.
