Elon Musk's xAI announced today that its application programming interface (API) is now available to the public, with $25 in monthly API credits available for free through the end of the year. The API allows developers to build applications on xAI’s Grok Large Language Model (LLM).
xAI’s API is priced at $5 per million input tokens and $15 per million output tokens, which is slightly higher compared to OpenAI’s GPT-4o model and Anthropic’s Claude3.5Sonnet model. However, the free $25 credit may be enough to entice some developers to at least check out xAI's tools and platform.
xAI’s API also supports “function calls”, allowing LLM to accept commands and access the functionality of other connected applications and services. At the same time, xAI’s API is compatible with OpenAI and Anthropic’s SDKs, allowing developers to easily replace these models with Grok-beta or other models on the xAI platform.
xAI recently launched a "Colossus" supercluster of 100,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs in Memphis, Tennessee, for training its new models. The new Grok model is coming soon, and according to xAI’s blog post, it’s a “preview of the new Grok model that is currently in the final stages of development.”
While $25 in free credits may not be a significant lure, it might be enough to entice some developers to at least check out xAI's tools and platform. With xAI’s API officially open, developers can look forward to more features and updates.
