OpenAI CEO Sam Altman recently announced that the company’s annualized revenue has reached US$3.4 billion, a significant increase from US$1.6 billion at the end of 2023 and US$1 billion last summer. This growth is largely due to ChatGPT’s subscription model and strategy of charging developers to use large language models. Microsoft's cooperation also contributes approximately US$200 million in annual revenue to OpenAI. This shows that even in the fiercely competitive AI market, OpenAI still maintains strong growth momentum.
According to The Information, Sam Altman, CEO of artificial intelligence company OpenAI, told employees that the company’s annual revenue has reached $3.4 billion in the past six months or so. This data shows that OpenAI's growth is accelerating even in the face of fierce competition.
By comparison, OpenAI's annualized revenue at the end of 2023 was only $1.6 billion, compared with about $1 billion last summer. This significant growth is largely due to ChatGPT’s subscription version, which offers higher message limits to users who pay at least $20 per month. Additionally, OpenAI generates significant revenue from charging developers to use the company's large language models in their own apps and services.
About $200 million in annual revenue comes from Microsoft, which sells OpenAI's large-scale language models to customers through its enterprise cloud computing platform Azure, and brings a certain percentage of OpenAI's revenue. This collaboration further drives OpenAI’s revenue growth.
As of now, OpenAI did not immediately respond to media requests for comment. Earlier this week, Apple announced a partnership with OpenAI. The company plans to plug ChatGPT directly into its iPhone, iPad and Mac operating systems, allowing Siri to contact ChatGPT to answer questions. However, the financial terms of the deal remain unknown.
OpenAI's rapid growth shows the success of its business model and the huge market demand for large language models. The continued development of OpenAI in the future deserves attention, and its cooperation with Apple also indicates that AI technology will be further integrated into people's daily lives.
