OpenAI announced the expansion of ChatGPT advanced voice mode to the web version, bringing users a more convenient and natural AI interaction experience. This move marks another important step forward for OpenAI in improving the user experience of ChatGPT, extending advanced voice features from iOS and Android applications to a wider range of platforms, making it easier for more users to use it. Paid users, including Plus, Enterprise, Teams and Edu subscribers, will be the first to experience this feature, with free users also getting a chance to try it out in the coming weeks.
OpenAI announced that it has expanded its ChatGPT advanced voice mode feature to the web version, allowing users to talk to AI chatbots directly in the browser.
The launch of the web version marks the continuation of the advanced voice mode functionality first introduced in the iOS and Android apps. The rollout of new features will first be available to paying users of ChatGPT, including Plus, Enterprise, Teams and Edu subscribers. Users need to go through the corresponding subscription service to experience this new feature.
Advanced Speech Mode leverages the native audio capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4o to enable more natural real-time conversations. This feature allows ChatGPT to not only understand the user's language, but also sense non-verbal signals, such as the speed of speaking. In addition, chatbots can respond to users with different emotions, adding to the realism of the interaction.
To start a voice conversation on a web page, users simply click on the voice icon in the lower right corner of the ChatGPT prompt window and then give the browser permission to access the computer's microphone. Once a voice conversation begins, users will see an interface with a blue ball in the center. Notably, users can choose from nine different output voices, each with a unique intonation and personality. For example, "Arbor" sounds relaxed and versatile, while "Ember" sounds confident and optimistic.
Chief product officer Kevin Weil said OpenAI plans to roll out the feature to free users in the coming weeks. It’s important to note that users with Plus and Team subscriptions will be subject to a daily usage limit when using Advanced Voice Mode. According to the instructions on the relevant help page, the time limit for daily use may change, and OpenAI will remind the user when there are only 15 minutes left. At the same time, free users will also have the opportunity to try out this feature in monthly previews.
