With the rapid development of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), PromptLayer, as a New York startup, has quickly entered the emerging field of prompt engineering. Prompt engineering helps users obtain more effective output by providing precise instructions for AI chatbots. PromptLayer founders Jared Zonelah and Jonathan Pedorn initially developed a tool to track tips on using AI chatbots themselves, which unexpectedly received a buzz from the market. After two years of development, PromptLayer has successfully launched a complete prompt management platform to help enterprises make more efficient use of large language models.
Recently, PromptLayer completed a $4.8 million seed financing round, aiming to further enhance its market competitiveness. The round of financing was led by Ivan Belkovic, and participants also included Peter Boyce II and several founders and operators in the field of AI.
The core product of PromptLayer is a "prompt registration center", which is equivalent to a content management system (CMS), providing version control functions to help users manage different versions of prompts and conduct comparison and testing. This allows even non-technical users to easily evaluate and optimize their tips for the best results in a variety of application scenarios.
Unlike many technology tool manufacturers, PromptLayer has turned its attention to non-technical users. Jared said their goal is to allow professionals in various fields — such as healthcare, law and education — to dominate application development, using their domain knowledge to conduct prompt engineering. PromptLayer hopes to help experts in these fields work effectively with engineers through its intuitive interfaces and tools.
Jared further pointed out that prompt engineering does not require complex programming skills and anyone can master it through simple training. He believes that changes in the market will demonstrate the effectiveness of this approach, especially in the context of today's growing demand for non-technical users.
PromptLayer currently has more than 10,000 users and has achieved 13 times revenue growth this year, all of which are achieved through word-of-mouth dissemination. As more and more teams realize the importance of domain experts in the AI construction process, PromptLayer is moving towards becoming a pioneer in the field of prompt engineering.
The success of PromptLayer not only demonstrates the importance of prompt engineering, but also provides more opportunities for non-technical users to participate in AI development, indicating the trend of popularization of AI technology in the future.
