The Engineering profession in Wrath of the Lich King continues to be considered one of the best, thanks to its fun and unique mode and the benefits players gain from it.
This guide covers the basics of how to get started in engineering, including the best pairings, races and classes, the difference between TBC and WLK, finding a professional trainer, and where to source engineering drawings.
New players who join "Wrath of the Lich King" first need to upgrade their majors in Classic Old World and Burning.
Toys, gadgets, ammo, explosives, valve particle extractors, unique mounts, pets and more! Dating back to Classic, engineering has always been a unique and interesting profession for players. This is still true in Wrath of the Lich King, and with even more utility, with Engineering standing as a top contender and arguably one of the best professions in both PvE and PvP.
Engineering goggles have always been the number one reason for players to become engineers, and WLK does not disappoint. For example, Armored Titan Steel Goggles, Appearance Liquefied Goggles, and Weakness Analysis Glasses will at least remain competitive among pre-raid equipment. As usual, these goggles only bind when picked up and require Engineering (400) to use.
Heart-seeking scope. The firepower is also excellent for hunters.
Wormhole Generator: Northrend brings all the excitement, convenience, and occasionally deadly consequences you've come to expect from the engineering profession. He will randomly transport you around Northrend (don't use it without the Parachute Cloak. Friendly reminder)
The new Engineering enchantment is another strong reason to consider Engineering. He'll create some engineering-specific bonuses for your own helmet, cloak, gloves, belt, and boots. Many of these combine gear attributes with other effects, such as the Mind Amplifying Disc Helmet Enchantment (+45 Stamina, Mind Control). Others only have individual electromagnetic pulse generators that have such an effect and can confuse nearby mechanical devices.
One of the most exciting new additions is the Machinist's bike/mechanical Roadhog-specific mount; the blueprint requires Exalted status with Alliance Vanguard or Horde Vanguard. The materials are very expensive, but the mount can be sold to other players and the sidecar can accommodate 1 passenger.
Kiwis provides banking, vending, and repair services (10 minutes, 1 hour cooldown). You can even release Kieves mid-battle to perform emergency repairs. This is an excellent perk for dungeons where you might want to take out some important items or repair damaged gear.
Portable Mailbox provides portable mail service (10 minutes, 2 hours cooldown) anywhere in the world, even in dungeons and raids. Anyone nearby can access the pocket mailbox.
In addition to still making regular engineering gadgets: gnome spinners, arc wrenches, blacksmith hammers, etc., WLK Engineering also introduces a new and very practical gadget that everyone wants to have:
Engineering is most often paired with mining to facilitate gathering needed materials. However, if you're a grinder like me, you'll find that engineering also pairs well with other gathering majors, so if you plan on taking both majors, it's a good idea to have an alt that grinds materials, Or if you are a big boss, please just AH. .
Dating back to Classic, in terms of racial advantage, gnomes still had the Wrath of the Lich King Engineering specialization, which gave them +15 to their Engineering skills.
As for the best career to study engineering? This is a problem. Hunters, it seems, naturally gravitate toward engineering because of the utility it provides with ammunition and ranged weapons. But in fact, Engineering is considered one of the best-matching majors for many professions, and one of the main reasons is the new skill of Engineering Enchantment, which can add Engineering-only enchantments to your equipment to increase its main attributes and other special effects.
The most notable addition to Engineering in Wrath of the Lich King is the Engineering enchantment. They will definitely make a huge difference to your gaming experience when it comes to enhancing your gear.
Listed below are all the Engineering enchantments available to you, some of which are learned from your Northrend Engineering trainer, and the rest from [DiMurphy Oshank] in Dalaran Learned, engineering enchantment enhancements do not stack with item enchantments, replace any enchantments you already have on those items, and can only be applied to your own gear:
Also new to Engineering is the ability to "recycle" mechanical corpses killed by players. The recycling part is random: some may be gray items (torn sprocket teeth, broken sprocket teeth, broken springs), and some may be engineering materials you need. You never know what you might recycle!
Another engineering difference between TBC and Wrath of the Lich King is how you interact with the gas clouds. In TBC, engineers need to be equipped with elaborate goggles to see the gas clouds on their minimap. However, in WLK, goggles are no longer required.
As long as you carry the Gas Valve Particle Extractor, gas clouds will automatically appear on your minimap. Players will still need to use an Extractor to extract materials. Instead of water particles and fire particles in TBC, you will now find crystalline items such as water crystals and fire crystals.
In WLK, the two engineering specializations are still gnomes and goblins. Similar to the past, you'll learn different drawings based on the specialization you choose. Gnomes tend to have fun, experimental items (eg: gnome X-ray glasses), and goblins really like blowing things up? ? ? (Universal Thermal Engineering Explosives).
Engineers have access to Narion in Tanaris, with a specialization conversion fee of 150G. You don't lose your current engineering skills, and you can switch back and forth between gnomes and goblins as many times as you like.
Below we will list all the locations for level 350-450 Engineering trainers in Wrath of the Lich King, divided into Alliance, Horde, and Neutral trainers.

The following shopping list is a very rough estimate of the quantities required to complete this leveling path and can only be used as a general idea. When you get to the yellow difficulty level (or worse, green), there may be more than one way to level up your skills. Furthermore, for the last few levels, we recommend that you decide for yourself how to reach the final goal, as there are multiple options to optimize your leveling path. Therefore, not every ingredient is listed below. Like all shopping lists, they will vary based on your luck, so think of this as a list of suggestions rather than a precise formula of numbers to adhere to:
You will need at least the following items:
Cobalt ingot x275-300
Saronite Ingot x330-350
Keen Explosion Trigger x20
Frost pattern cloth x10
Earth Crystal x10
Water Crystal x15
North land x10
Eternal Shadow x10
Skinning knife x20
Miner's Hoe x20
Blacksmith's Hammer x20
Then, you can follow this guide to level up. In most cases we try not to go beyond the yellow difficulty range to minimize the number of reps required to complete skill points. If we have to extend to green difficulty due to cost, we will have a reminder accordingly.
Trainer blueprints
Make sure you learn the [Cobalt Screw] blueprint from the Northrend Engineering Trainer, it will increase your skill points from 350 to 370. The [Subtle Explosion Trigger] blueprint has the same effect, it will turn green at 375, but you can still use this blueprint up to 385. Also, remember to save all finished products for leveling.
