I once successfully created a batch of domain accounts with mailboxes using a windows program. However, when I gave this code to one of my colleagues (she was responsible for developing web applications) and migrated it to asp.net, it could only Create domain account, cannot create mailbox. Why?
We consulted a Microsoft engineer and he told us that this was due to insufficient permissions of asp.net. We should simulate the user in asp.net so that it can be successfully created.
I excerpted relevant articles from Microsoft:
Impersonate an IIS authenticated account or user
To impersonate a Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS) authenticated user when every request is received for every page in an ASP.NET application, you must include in the Web.config file for this application <identity> tag and set the impersonate attribute to true. For example:
<identity impersonate="true" />
Impersonating a specific user for all requests to an ASP.NET application
To impersonate a specific user for all requests on all pages of an ASP.NET application, you can specify userName and password attribute. For example:
<identity impersonate="true" userName="accountname" password="password" />
Note: The identity of the process that impersonates a specific user on a thread must have the "As part of the operating system" permission. By default, the Aspnet_wp.exe process runs under a computer account named ASPNET. However, this account does not have the necessary permissions to impersonate a specific user. If you try to impersonate a specific user, an error message will appear.
To resolve this issue, use one of the following methods:
•
Grant the ASPNET account (the least privileged account) "Act as part of the operating system" permission.
Note: Although this method may resolve the issue, Microsoft does not recommend this method.
•
In the <processModel> configuration section of the Machine.config file, change the account under which the Aspnet_wp.exe process runs to the System account.
Impersonating an authenticated user in code
To impersonate an authenticated user (User.Identity) only when running a specific part of the code, you can use the following code. This method requires that the authentication user ID be of type WindowsIdentity.
Visual Basic .NET
Dim impersonationContext As System.Security.Principal.WindowsImpersonationContext
Dim currentWindowsIdentity As System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity
currentWindowsIdentity = CType(User.Identity, System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity)
impersonationContext = currentWindowsIdentity.Impersonate()
'Insert your code that runs under the security context of the authenticating user here.
impersonationContext.Undo()
Visual C# .NET
System.Security.Principal.WindowsImpersonationContext impersonationContext;
impersonationContext =
((System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity)User.Identity).Impersonate();
//Insert your code that runs under the security context of the authenticating user here.
impersonationContext.Undo();
Visual J# .NET
System.Security.Principal.WindowsImpersonationContext impersonationContext;
impersonationContext =
((System.Security.Principal.WindowsIdentity)get_User().get_Identity()).Impersonate();
//Insert your code that runs under the security context of the authenticating user here.
impersonationContext.Undo();
Impersonating a Specific User in Code
To impersonate a specific user only when running specific parts of your code, use the following code:
