I have been doing forums for about three years, and I have spent a lot of energy. During this period, I almost gave up several times, but I still persisted. I have written down some of my ideas, hoping that everyone can refer to them. You are also welcome to communicate with everyone. It is written very seriously.
1. Select the program. Don't choose a forum program with simple programs and few functions for the sake of convenience.
At the beginning of the forum, a friend introduced a set of ASP programs to the forum. The database was ACESS, which was said to have the fewest plug-ins and the fastest speed. Because at that time, I didn't think there was anything wrong with it at first, but later I realized that I really regretted it.
First of all, as your IP traffic increases and the number of member participants increases, many functions are indispensable. Later I discovered that this program does not have the function of batch uploading attachments. As my picture forum, this is fatal. Pictures Passing them one by one will make you vomit blood. There is no medal awarding function, no post rating function, and very few templates. These are all must-have features in the late development stage of the forum, but unfortunately there is nothing. I have modified at least thirty places, almost becoming their developer, a waste of time and manpower.
You should also pay attention to the ACESS database. Once the number of posts exceeds 10,000, it will often freeze and the web page cannot be opened. ACESS database instability is not a legend. It is recommended to use SQL database.
2. It is best to open up the permissions of your section in the early stage, which will help search engines to include the posts. Don't set permissions from the beginning. You can't go to this section, and that level is not enough. Because most of the early visitors are tourists, they can’t see this or that, and they have no intention of staying. You want everyone to get to know your forum first.
3. Back up your database frequently. Because you often encounter modifications in the early stages, if you are not careful, your previous posts will be in vain. This is very important. The post I worked so hard to post is gone in an instant, which is extremely painful.
4. Don’t always wait for search engines for traffic sources, but also take the initiative to promote yourself.
Don't waste time on constantly installing irrelevant plug-ins or constantly changing templates. Last year I met a webmaster who also ran a forum. His template remained the same for a few days. He kept installing this plug-in and that plug-in, making the website very beautiful. One day a year later, I came back to look at his website. The number of posts is still a little, and the number of people online is still a few people every day. He also complains to me every day about the lack of popularity of the website. Who can blame him?
5. The website has its own characteristics that make visitors willing to stay.
It is better to be specialized than to be broad. I often see some websites that are made like Sina portals. They have all kinds of topics. At first glance, they look very grand, but when you enter, you find that there is not much content. When you are alone, do you have time to update every day? How many topics can you cover in a day? Have you ever considered it? If you want to do animation, do animation, and if you want to do industry, do industry. Don't think about becoming a fat man in one sitting.
Don’t set up too many sections in the early stages, because you simply won’t have time to manage them. Focus on some sections, otherwise visitors will only see a few things in each section, and they will immediately know that the website is not popular.
6. Don’t be stingy. Do you think this is still the era of free? It is much better to pay a little money in the early stage and recruit some good moderators than to work alone. There are several moderators on my website, and they can post hundreds of posts a day, which immediately creates momentum. I give some small gifts or Q-coin rewards to the top ones.
8. The forum must be interactive. A forum without interaction will not go far, so everyone can participate. For example, my website often hosts some PS competitions, or member photo shows, etc. You don’t need to copy them, you have to do them according to the theme of your own forum. It is also important to register more vest posts to make new members feel that they are being noticed. The number of people online can be adjusted appropriately, and good-faith cheating is also necessary.
9. Advertising, advertising, profit after profit. When you want to build a website, you must confirm your theme and future profit direction. Don't say anything, it's just a personal hobby and I don't plan to make any money. This idea is very wrong. With money, you can use better server space, recruit more people, and organize more activities, which will make you more motivated. Since you want to build a good website for a long time, you should have the intention to make money. A website that cannot make money is not a good website, and a webmaster who does not want to make money is not a good webmaster. Also, many websites have a concept that my website is not popular enough and should not put ads or other things. But how much popularity is enough, and when is the most appropriate time to put it? I have seen websites with hundreds of IPs a day putting dozens of pop-up ads, and I have also seen websites with tens of thousands of IPs a day not having a single ad. I personally think that generally speaking, when the IP is above 3000, you can start to put some GOOGLE or some affiliate ads. The premise is that it does not affect the web page opening speed and content visibility.
10. The most important point is to keep it in balance! If this is not done, everything mentioned above will be in vain. The early days when the forum was not popular were the saddest days. I would just post alone every day. I don’t know how I survived those days when search engines didn’t include them. Many people couldn’t get through this. Just give up. After this period of time, the traffic will increase, reasonably arrange moderator management, and appropriately place some profitable advertisements, then you will be relaxed.
One more point, I would like to add that many people say that you need to buy a good and large space in the early stage. I agree with this point, but large space is too expensive and not suitable for grassroots webmasters. My personal more realistic suggestion is that in the early stage, you can Find a space that is cheaper, has a SQL database and supports PHP. When your data volume is large, the popularity is good, and you have some hope, it will be more appropriate to switch to a better space. It is often seen that some people spend a lot of money to buy a few gigabytes or more than ten gigabytes of space, but the total data volume after a year is less than one gigabyte. Isn't it a cheap space provider? It doesn't matter if you have money, but those who don't have money should think about it carefully.
What I have written so much is based on my many years of experience. I hope it will be of some help to everyone. The website is based on integrity, and speculation will not last long. To create a website with content and a website that people are willing to come back to is the goal that embodies value.
