The compact USB flash drive is the mobile storage device of choice for many friends. However, because of its small size, the USB flash drive is also very easy to lose, and the important data and information stored in it may also be leaked. Although using encryption software can play a protective role, it is more troublesome. This problem has troubled the editor for a long time. After starting to use Windows 7, I discovered that a built-in function in Win 7 can encrypt our USB disk.
The BitLocker security function is already available in the Vista system, and the BitLocker function of Windows 7 is more powerful. It does not require users to modify complicated settings such as group policies. It can be used as long as you log in to the Windows 7 system as an administrator. After inserting the USB flash drive, right-click the USB flash drive in "Computer" and select "Enable BitLocker" in the pop-up menu.
At this time, a "BitLocker Drive Encryption" wizard will pop up. Select the method to unlock the drive as needed. The editor recommends that you select "Use Password to Unlock the Drive". After entering the password twice in a row (the password must be at least 8 characters), click "Next".
In order to prevent forgetting the password, BitLocker will create a recovery key and save it to another drive or print it for storage. If you choose to save the key, you will get a text file named "BitLocker Recovery Key***.txt".
Finally, click "Start Encryption" and BitLocker will begin to encrypt your USB flash drive. The time required for this process will be determined by the capacity of the encrypted USB flash drive and the size of the stored files.
After the encryption is completed, go back to the drive list and you will see that our USB flash drive has been "locked"!
After inserting the USB flash drive into the computer in the future, a "BitLocker Drive Encryption" prompt box will pop up first. Only after entering the password correctly can the USB flash drive be used normally.
When a USB flash drive encrypted by BitLocker is inserted into a computer with an XP system under Win 7, it can also be protected by BitLocker encryption. The difference from Win 7 is that you can open the USB flash drive under XP first, but the files inside need to enter the correct password. It can be opened with "BitLocker To Go Reader", so friends who don't have Win 7 installed don't have to worry about being unable to use the encrypted USB flash drive.
