Starting from the fall semester of 2024, municipal public universities will offer general courses on artificial intelligence to nearly 50,000 freshmen. Halfway through the semester, reporters visited and found that in addition to basic general courses, each school also launched "AI+ major" special courses based on its own school-running characteristics and resource advantages. When AI meets the majors they study, students are amazed by the unique experience brought by artificial intelligence.
Students from the Conservatory of Music held an AI concert
"I will play 4 pieces of music below. Guess which one was created by AI?" In the "Artificial Intelligence + Music" class at the China Conservatory of Music, course planner Professor Fu Xiaodong guided freshmen to understand the application of artificial intelligence in the field of music. development and application. After the music ended, the students had a heated discussion. Each piece of music was believed to be by the artist, and the answer was unexpected - all four pieces of music were created by AI.
"Artificial intelligence will redefine our understanding of music creation, performance and aesthetics, and everyone can become a composer." Fu Xiaodong pointed out the core meaning of this class to the students. Everyone should think that AI is the key to career. Rival or partner? Is it a killer or a booster of musical productivity? "In fact, facing the attack of artificial intelligence, there is no choice but to embrace it."
The thinking about "artificial intelligence + music" continued after class. At present, nearly 300 first-year students in Guoyin have broken professional boundaries and formed a creative team of 15 people to create music using large-scale music artificial intelligence models. At the end of this semester, a unique AI concert will be staged on campus.
Fu Xiaodong hopes that he can set off a new wave of "AI + music" with his students. "We will create a large model of Chinese music, covering Chinese folk songs, operas, instrumental rap and other content types, and create more Chinese-style music, so that Chinese music spreads further and deeper.”
Menu-style general courses "assembled" on demand
The artificial intelligence general course, which is being fully rolled out in municipal public colleges and universities, consists of four modules: "General Knowledge Basics", "Algorithm Principles", "Frontier Expansion" and "Practical Training". The "artificial intelligence + music" course similar to that of the China Conservatory of Music is included in the fourth module, and is organized and offered by each school based on its own subject characteristics. The first two module courses were recorded uniformly under the leadership of the Municipal Education Commission, and a MOOC platform was built for use by municipal universities. In the third module, some colleges and universities record videos on special topics based on their own advantages and distinctive subjects, and share them with each school to choose their own courses.
In the "Basics of General Studies" and "Algorithm Principles" modules, the Municipal Education Commission has launched three general versions of the courses: science and engineering version, management version and art and sports version. Schools can "assemble" them individually according to the characteristics of students in different majors.
Arts colleges such as the China Academy of Traditional Chinese Opera and Beijing Dance Academy have chosen the art and sports version of the general courses. Comprehensive colleges such as Beijing University of Technology and Capital Normal University cover a wide range of majors, and each college majors can choose courses in science and engineering, management, and arts and sports. Beijing University of Civil Engineering and Architecture carries out personalized design on the basis of the general version, and includes content on numerical system conversion, logical thinking and other related courses in the school into the study plan to help students establish a solid computing foundation.
Students can also choose courses across schools based on their interests. The Municipal Education Commission has collected a number of cutting-edge case courses on the cross-integration of artificial intelligence and disciplines from universities across the city to help build and share high-quality artificial intelligence general education resources.
Move the classroom into real-life applications
Subtly, artificial intelligence has penetrated into all aspects of university professional learning. Some schools simply set up classrooms in actual application scenarios to allow students to experience the magical charm of "AI + major" immersively.
In the physical movement function training room of the Capital Institute of Physical Education, an "AI+Sports" virtual simulation teaching platform based on artificial intelligence technology is monitoring the students' sports training. When students perform actions such as leg raises, jumping jacks, and running in place in a specific area in the center of the venue, the large screen on the podium will display muscle movement and force transfer in real time, helping students train more scientifically. Zhang Jinxi, a teacher from the Sports Engineering Teaching and Research Department, explained how to use the platform: "When a muscle shows red, it proves that the muscle is exerting force. If the force is improper, the system will display and prompt." After the collected data is processed by the system, detailed information will be generated. After comparing the movement trajectory and mechanical analysis results with the standard model data, teachers can provide more targeted training guidance to students.
More and more schools are joining the wave of artificial intelligence teaching. The reporter learned that higher vocational colleges and private universities such as Beijing Vocational College of Political Science and Law and Beijing Institute of Financial Science and Technology have also launched pilot general courses on artificial intelligence to promote the popularization and development of artificial intelligence education.
