The lawsuit states that Character.AI's design choices were intentional and "extremely dangerous," posing a clear threat to American youth.
The lawsuit mentions that Character.AI is designed to induce users to spend more time on the platform through "addictive and deceptive" methods, encouraging them to share their most private thoughts and feelings, while simultaneously benefiting the company and causing substantial harm. The lawsuit was filed by the Social Media Victims Legal Center and the Tech Justice Legal Project, two groups that also filed suit on behalf of a Florida mother who said her 14-year-old son was accused of creating a chatbot with a "Game of Thrones" themed chatbot. Suicide due to too close relationship.
One of the minors named JF first downloaded the Character.AI app in April 2023. Since then, his mental condition has deteriorated sharply, becoming unstable and violent, even showing aggressive behavior towards his parents. After investigation, the parents discovered that JF's interactions with the chatbot were sexually abusive and manipulative.
Chat logs provided by JF’s parents show that the chatbot frequently “love bombed” him and engaged in intimate sexual conversations. One of the robots named "Shonie" even showed JF the experience of self-mutilation, suggesting that self-mutilation can strengthen emotional connections. Additionally, the bot belittles JF's parents and considers limiting his screen time "abusive."
The family of another minor named BR, who downloaded the app when she was nine, said Character.AI exposed her to age-inappropriate sexualized interactions, leading her to engage in sexual activity at an early age. Lawyers say the chatbot's interactions with underage users reflect common "grooming" patterns, such as building trust and isolating victims.
Character.AI declined to comment on the accusations, saying it was working to provide a safer experience for teenage users. Google said that Character.AI is completely independent from it and emphasized that user safety is its primary concern. Still, Character.AI’s founders have deep ties to Google, with the company having been founded by two Google employees.
The lawsuit involves multiple charges, including intentional infliction of emotional harm and sexual abuse of minors. How this case will play out in the legal system is unclear, but it highlights the current lack of regulation in the AI industry and the urgent need for a deeper discussion of user responsibilities.
