Many people simply convert color photos into black and white photos by directly decolorizing them. The black and white photos obtained by these methods often lose photo details. Let me introduce to you another method of converting color photos to black and white, which mainly uses channels, layers, etc.
Look at the original picture first.
Black and white photo after color removal directly. Black and white photo produced by this tutorial.
First, open the original image in Photoshop, switch to the channel panel, and observe the red, green, and blue channels to see which one performs better? Here we choose the green channel. Press Ctrl+A to select, then Ctrl+C to copy. Then go back to the Layers panel, create a new layer, and press Ctrl+V to paste, so that we get a black and white photo.
Perform a Gaussian Blur filter with a radius set to less than 1px, then perform a USM Sharpen filter.
Create a new layer and use the black and white gradient tool to draw a gradient.
Set the layer mode to Multiply and adjust the opacity to a lower level.
Create a new layer and select the head using the Lasso Tool.
Use the gradient tool to fill from white to transparent.
Perform a Gaussian Blur with a Radius of 8.0px, then adjust the Fill to 0.
Finally add the Outer Glow layer style.
Get the final effect from before.
