Because the contrast between light and dark in the original photo was too strong, we used Photoshop to make the character's skin tone more transparent. However, it is easy to overexpose using general methods. Here we use Photsohop’s calculation command to do it for your reference.

final effect
First, let's test it with the general color mixing method.
First use our most commonly used color levels to brighten the picture. The effect is either gray or the details are seriously lost.

Figure 2
Using curves also fails to achieve the same effect.
Figure 3
Now we use the calculation command to calculate the selection we want and then adjust the brightness to make the skin look more transparent.
Select the "Image - Calculate" command from the Photoshop menu.
Figure 4
Observing the original image, we found that the middle color of the character's skin color was mostly red, so we used the red channel and gray to calculate it. Make sure to check the gray box next to Invert.
Mode: Multiply

If you look at the calculated Alpha1 channel, you will see that the highlights on the face are darker. This is exactly the selection we want.

Calculate Alpha2, hold down Ctrl and click Alpha2 to load the selection. A warning appears: Any pixels not larger than 50% of the selected selection will be invisible. Just click OK.

The effect of viewing pictures is to increase the brightness. Now the adjustment will not easily cause overexposure.
Figure 13
If you feel that the brightness is not enough, you can hold down Ctrl and point the mask of Curve Adjustment Layer 1 to bring up the selection. Create Curve Adjustment Layer 2 again.
Figure 14
In fact, this does not have much impact on the background. If you feel that the background has also been brightened, you can use a black brush to paint the parts other than the character with the mask of the curve layer selected.
The effect after a little sharpening and grinding is as shown below
Of course, you can also make subtle color adjustments in the middle color selection just now. The other color adjustment processes will not be introduced here. Finally, the overall style can be adjusted according to personal aesthetic point of view...
This method works equally well for other pictures.

Perhaps the effect is not very obvious from the above steps. However, this example only provides a method to adjust the highlights of the image without exposing it. You must also combine other techniques to make the image you adjust more delicate...
