On January 20, 2011, the 22nd HDwiki website building lecture series invited the unforgettable experience of creating the World Wide Standard Web.
Below is the entire lecture.
Moderator: Hello everyone, this is the 22nd issue of the HDwiki webmaster lecture series, which is organized to promote the development of the wiki industry and strengthen communication and learning among webmasters. Welcome to this lecture!
Zhou Qian: Hello everyone, my name is Zhou Qian, and I am the founder of the World Wide Standard Network. I am originally from Shandong and now live in Beijing. In 2007, he graduated with a Ph.D. from the Institute of Computing Technology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, majoring in computer system architecture. From July 2007 to February 2010, he worked as a software development engineer, project manager, and technical supervisor in a state-owned enterprise in Beijing, engaged in the development of embedded C language compilers. Since February 2010, he has founded Wanwei Standard Network and is engaged in many aspects such as technology, recruitment, management, strategic operations, and website promotion. The company was registered in March, the website was launched in May, and content began to be uploaded at the end of July. At the end of August, Wanwei Standard Network was shortlisted for the top 20 in the 2nd Grassroots Entrepreneurship Competition hosted by the Internet Society of China and Entrepreneurship State. At present, the company has attracted powerful shareholders to join and will conduct the second round of financing.
Moderator: Okay, it seems that Dr. Zhou’s personal experience is still very rich. So, can you tell us about the motivation and background for the establishment of the World Wide Standard Network? Why did you think of building such a website?
Zhou Qian: The establishment of the World Wide Standard Network took several years of preparation. It was an accident that I established it in 2010.
The original origin was that a CEO of Electric Power participated in the revision of the standard. During the revision of the standard, some problems were discovered and some difficulties were encountered. For example, participation in the revision of the standard was not high, public participation was even lower, and standard update and replacement lagged behind the international standards. . To give a few simple examples, such as the melamine incident in milk, there is a lack of corresponding standards. The hastily released electric bicycles fall under the standards of motor vehicles, which has caused an uproar among the public. Later, I discovered that using wiki to collaboratively edit standards could solve these problems very well, so I came up with the idea of creating the World Wide Standard Network and applied for patent protection.
I know this boss, who is also from the same hometown. After many contacts and understandings, I conducted in-depth research on the development of the World Wide Standard Network. I agreed with the idea of revising standards, so we registered a company together and founded the World Wide Standard Network.
Wanwei Standards Network, which means "all people maintain standards", implements the principle of national democratic standards revision, aims to promote the revision and formulation of national standards, industry standards, etc. in the form of a wiki, and promote social progress. complete.
Moderator: The accurate positioning of the website has laid the direction for the future World Wide Standard Network. So what is the current development status of the website? What is the user scale and influence?
Zhou Qian: At present, the content of the website has begun to take shape, but it is still being supplemented and improved. Promotion work has been launched and is beginning to bear fruit. At present, it has attracted powerful shareholders to join and has begun preparations for a new round of financing. Both user scale and influence need to be strengthened. complete
Moderator: Could you please tell me the current registered users and traffic situation of the World Wide Standard Network?
Zhou Qian: The latest ranking of the World Wide Standard Network is now 920,000 in March and 650,000 in January. Baidu included 43,400. There are not too many registered users yet. Our website is positioned as a niche website and needs to be publicized and promoted. complete
Moderator: The establishment and cultivation of users is often the key to a website, and it is also the most difficult stage in the entire development process. As the only standards revision platform in China, who are the main groups using the World Wide Web Standards Network, and what are their characteristics? What value can the World Wide Standard Web bring to users?
Zhou Qian: The Wanwei Standards Network provides national standards, industry standards, local standards and international standards. The Wanwei Standards Network is mainly used by professionals to query and edit standards in various industries.
The user groups of the World Wide Standard Network mainly fall into three categories: one is professional researchers who participate in standards revision and standard research; one is professional technical and managerial personnel who need to learn and implement standards; one is concerned with standard revision, Executives focused on corporate development. These three types of people are just small groups in society, and the World Wide Standard Network is a professional website focused on this small group. These small groups promote technological progress, control the economic lifeline, and are the elite of society. Of course, the user base needs to be more refined.
The World Wide Standard Network provides users with a platform on which they can conveniently query, edit, communicate, discuss, learn, and compare standards. The Wanwei Standards Network also provides industry development, procurement information, expert opinions, Wanwei blogs and Wanwei Q&A, integrating standards and industry information. complete.
Moderator: If you look at it this way, the website currently mainly provides "industry standard information", so how do users participate? As an open platform, how do you manage users and content on the website?
Zhou Qian: Users can upload and create standards, post comments, edit standards, write blogs, post questions and answers, and read news and information. There are people within our company who are responsible for managing the content of the website. We will send text messages to remind users who post random advertisements. If the ban continues, we will freeze such users. For advertising information, we will delete it.
Moderator: There is a certain threshold for encyclopedia in China, and it is difficult to guide users to actively contribute content. How do you achieve this?
Zhou Qian: Encyclopedia is indeed more serious than a forum, and user participation is less. Our website provides standards and is more professional, with less user participation. Most of the content is uploaded by ourselves. We hope that through Make early efforts to improve the content, then gradually attract and guide users to contribute content, and assist in content management. complete.
Moderator: Updating content by yourself will be difficult and requires a lot of labor costs. Does the World Wide Standard Network currently operate as a team?
Zhou Qian: Wanwei Standard Network is a corporate operation with a current team of 10 full-time people. I am responsible for the whole thing, 3 people are responsible for technology, 2 people are responsible for online promotion, and 4 people are responsible for website content construction. There is also a part-time network administrator, and the company also recruits part-time students and interns from time to time to do some things. complete.
Moderator: Let’s talk about the product. I found that the World Wide Standard Network has made many changes based on HDwiki. For example, the “Industry Classification” on the homepage is different from the original homepage. Why did such changes be made?
Zhou Qian: The World Wide Standard Network has made a lot of changes based on HDwiki. These changes are based on the needs of our website, because standards are divided into national standards, industry standards, local standards and international standards, etc., and each standard is classified under There are many subcategories. When we originally chose Interactive Encyclopedia, we mainly based it on the fact that the interface of HDwiki was better than that of MediaWiki, and the code was easier to understand. However, the editor of Interactive Encyclopedia is inferior, so we integrated a more powerful editor ourselves. And we have also made a lot of innovations in technology, such as automatically generating labels, automatically classifying subcategories, automatically generating relevant standards, etc. complete.
Moderator: In terms of products, HDwiki will adhere to the needs of webmasters and users in the future, and provide more and better functions on the basis of existing functions to meet everyone's needs. I hope that all webmasters can do more Follow us. Okay, I'm a little off topic, haha! I would like to ask Dr. Zhou, what is the biggest difficulty encountered in the process of operating and maintaining the World Wide Standard Network? How was it solved?
Zhou Qian: In the process of operating the World Wide Standard Network, the biggest difficulties come from funds and talents.
In the early days of the company's establishment, the principle of using funds was to save as much as possible. Of course, in addition to reducing resources, we also had to open up flows, so we strived for financing and income. Now it seems that we have achieved certain results and alleviated the financial pressure. . Excellent talents do not want to come to entrepreneurial companies. Chinese culture is more about moderation, unwilling to take risks, afraid of failure, and more inclined to competition. They want to go to stable and well-known large enterprises or institutions. We attract talents through different methods such as full-time, part-time, and internship. They can work together or not work in the unit to complete the company's tasks. This breaks through the limitations of time and space, and at the same time provides incentives in terms of remuneration.
Another technical difficulty is that we need to convert the non-editable PDF file into an editable Word document and upload it to the web page for editing. Most of our PDF files are scanned PDFs, with a lot of formulas and complex tables and charts. I have tried all the software to convert PDF to Word, but the conversion effect is not very good. In the end, we printed it out and then used it through Hanwang Patented scanner identification and manual proofreading are used to solve the problem. This process cost a lot of manpower, material and financial resources, and also took a lot of time. complete.
Moderator: Speaking of funding, this issue may be of concern to many people. Can you tell us about your financing methods? How did you get your first investment in your website? Tell us briefly
Zhou Qian: There is a saying that third-rate companies sell hard work, second-rate companies sell products, first-class companies sell patents, and super-first-class companies sell standards. As the only standard editing platform in China, we have grown very rapidly.
Although our website traffic is not very high, we are positioned as a niche-oriented website, but these niches are the niches that promote technological progress, the niches that control the economic lifeline, and are the elites of society. Moreover, standards have a very close relationship with products and manufacturers. The battle over standards is a battle over the interests of manufacturers. Whoever masters the standards will control the market. Our website gathers standards from all industries and has a lot of room for development. complete.
Moderator: Standards determine the ups and downs of an industry and the development destiny of a company. I believe that Wanwei Standard Network will definitely get better and better in the future! Okay, my last question is, can you tell me the next step for the website?
Zhou Qian: The next step for the website will be to discuss cooperation with various standards committees, and contact manufacturers to promote the website. If 2010 is the year of website construction, 2011 is the year of website promotion. complete.
Thank you all for participating in this lecture, and I hope you can give us more valuable suggestions for our website.
