The facial features of a character is a very detailed work - the faces of different people are composed of the same "parts" (facial features), and it is the subtle changes in these parts that cause the differences in appearance between people. This section will take readers to gradually understand the rules and techniques of character face drawing, and will lead readers to practice drawing specific character faces in the examples in the following sections.
Drawing characters with Photoshop is a bit more complicated in this type of painting. The main reason is that it is not easy to grasp the facial features of people, which means that it is relatively difficult to shape the "shape".
1. The concept of “Three Courts and Five Eyes”
Although human faces are different, they also have certain commonalities. This commonality is the structural relationship of the "three courts and five eyes" on the human face. Figure 7-1 is a schematic structural diagram of the "three courts and five eyes".
Figure 7-1 Structural diagram of “Three Courts and Five Eyes”
"Three Courts" means that the virtual line from the hairline to the two eyebrow tips is one court; the virtual line from the eyebrow tip line to the tip of the nose is one court; the nose tip line to the mandible is one court. The distances between these lines are roughly equal. , we often call the part in the middle of these lines the "three courts".
"Five eyes" means that the virtual line at the horizontal position of the human eye is divided into five parts on average, each part is the width of one eye - the width between the two eyes is equivalent to the width of one eye, and the distance from the corner of the eye to the side of the face is equal to the width of one eye. The width is also equivalent to the width of one eye. We often call these five parts "five eyes".
The distance equality of the "three courts and five eyes" observed during painting is only reflected when the human face is facing the observer. When a person's face looks up or down, the observed "three courts" will change in perspective, and the "five eyes" remain basically unchanged; when the person's face is turned sideways to the observer, the observed "five eyes" Perspective changes will occur, and the "three courts" remain basically unchanged.
There are also various changes in eyebrows, mouth, and nose. Readers should observe, think and accumulate more.
Of course, the facial structure of many people may not completely conform to the rule of "three courts and five eyes", and their appearance also belongs to the category of correct facial features. Therefore, the three courts and five eyes are not the standard for testing whether the facial features are correct. The author prefers to understand it as a reference , the results of different people's reference will be different.
In addition, depending on the type of painting, the methods of expressing "Three Courts and Five Eyes" are also different - for example, the process of comic creation will exaggerate a certain feature of the character to make the shape more vivid; abstract paintings often A great example of breaking this rule.
2. Grasp the character’s face shape
Different people have different face shapes, and many experts use geometric shapes to summarize them - some people have straight trapezoids; some have inverted trapezoids; some have rectangles; some have circles; some have squares, etc. The method of summarizing human faces using geometric shapes can effectively capture the characteristics of human faces, which is very conducive to the overall portrayal.
