[Preface] Visual design is neither my major nor my specialty, but recently I have been thinking about this topic due to my work. Simply do some exploration to see what are the factors that affect the quality of a website, especially if you can make some feasible guidance plans.
Why is quality sense important?
Because the sense of quality can enhance the user's evaluation of the credibility and reliability of a website, thereby giving him a good first impression and initial sense of trust.
It's like the first impression of two people who meet each other for 10 seconds.
Users don’t understand user experience, users don’t understand color levels, and even the sense of quality is not something users directly care about, but users will judge a website based on their first impression:
1. What does this website do?
2. Is this website trustworthy?
3. Is this website professional?
This first impression may only take a few seconds for the user to make a preliminary judgment: Is this website safe or unsafe, reliable or not? Should I continue to try?
In just a few seconds, users definitely don’t have time to read the lengthy “About Us” article, nor do they have time to experience the easy-to-use interactive process through search, purchase, and registration.
In just a few seconds, what will affect the user's decision?
All the factors that affect his decision to stay or leave need to take effect in a few seconds. What are they? The designer stands aside for a while.
Brand and word-of-mouth - You can do a terrible job visually, but if you are well-known enough, for example, users see your website's advertisements on CCTV advertisements, then it's okay, and maybe they can stay for a while.
Access channels - users may come through other well-known websites, such as a certain website under Taobao, an important partner of Sina, etc. Although the website itself lacks popularity and brand, with the help of these sources and "relatives", it can also Ability to influence user decisions.
The content, that is, the base material - in a few seconds, the user can quickly browse and scan to determine what the website does and whether it meets his needs. All the headlines, emphasized words, product pictures and prices presented can help users make judgments.
Therefore, in some companies, there may be roles such as content strategists and brand strategists to plan content for website columns and sections. Interaction designers sometimes just work with characters.
Designers please come forward, including interaction designers (some companies may be website planners, or it may be completed directly by visual designers in cooperation with content providers)
Information design - interaction designers must know how to type, layout, and prioritize content and background materials, so as to improve the efficiency of users' initial judgment and directly convey the core value that the website owner wants to convey. To effectively convey it to users, for this reason, interaction designers need to fully understand the content and website positioning, and the target audience, and need to fully cooperate with the content provider - of course, the supporting visuals must have the same understanding ability to truly play a role. .
Visual Design - color matching, texture, graphics and text, visual details, nothing is more powerful than visual judgment at first sight. What the website does and the sense of credibility are of course closely related to information design (Information), but in the final analysis, what is ultimately presented to the user is an overall impression, and visual design has to bear more responsibility for this overall impression.
Of course, there are other factors that are also important, such as stability-the user cannot pop up a 404 error page with just one click, and the functions on the page must be tested and available, etc., but this is still based on user interaction. In many cases, Hou, users who have a bad first impression may leave without even a click.
If the colors of a website are messy and the buttons have multiple textures and colors, then users will not be able to see whether the website is easy to use or not, because based on the first impression, they will feel that the website is not done carefully and is not professional enough. , and if it is not trustworthy enough, it will be lost directly.
The previous formula: useful > easy to use > want to use, seems to have placed the visual and interface design levels at a lower priority level.
But in many cases, users must be retained first before they can judge "whether it is useful and whether it is easy to use." Vision instead becomes a prerequisite.
Users will not be picky about colors, and users will not think that fonts are not good-looking enough, but they will vaguely judge the credibility and reliability of the website through the first visual impression.
The visual sense of quality created by a website will undoubtedly enhance users' evaluation of the website as "credible" and "professional".
So I think the levels of user experience mentioned before: useful > usable > easy to use > want to use, are certainly correct.
But this is the idea when planning products from the perspective of designers and product managers. When planning products, you should follow the ideas. Before you take a good look, first make sure that your product really solves the needs and has good usability. of. But conversely, from the user's perspective, how can we let him use a product that he doesn't even want to look at and "jumps out" when he sees it?
Brand reputation is sometimes an innate advantage. Even if it is not, it cannot be rushed. Entering the channel requires more public relations and resource exchange work.
In terms of content provision, as a designer, you can only influence your partners, but you cannot take the lead, and sometimes you are beyond your reach.
But information design and visual design are the responsibility of the website designer.
How to improve the quality of the website, you need to first understand in what aspects and details the "sense of quality" will be reflected, and also, as a designer, whether the sense of quality is recognized by the target group and other partners of the website. of.
During the following period, Heidi will select some cases, think carefully about what is a sense of quality and what is not a sense of quality, and try to summarize it, try to do something about it, and appeal to friends who are also concerned about this topic and have experience. Communicate with me more.
